How Do You Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT? A South Jersey Business Owner's Guide

The short answer

No one can guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend your business. But you can make your business easier to discover by clearly explaining your services, keeping your business details accurate across the web, publishing content that answers real customer questions, and earning credible references from other websites, publications and customers.

More customers are using AI to find businesses. Here's what that means for local companies and how to prepare.

For years, getting found online meant showing up when someone searched Google for something like “HVAC company near me” or “best roofing contractor in South Jersey.”

That's still important. But there's another way customers are finding businesses.

Instead of searching through ten websites, they're asking ChatGPT and other AI tools questions like:

  • Who’s a reliable contractor in Cape May County?
  • What’s the best HVAC company near Cherry Hill?
  • Can you recommend a local marketing company in South Jersey?
  • Who installs garage floor coatings near me?

And they're often looking for a recommendation, not just a list of websites.

That creates an interesting opportunity for small businesses. But it also raises a question:

How does AI decide which businesses to recommend?

1. AI needs to understand what your business actually does

Having a website isn't enough if that website doesn't clearly explain your services.

Let's say you own a heating and cooling company. Your website talks about AC repairs, but your biggest opportunity is installing new heating systems and ductless mini-splits.

If those installation services aren't clearly represented on your website, you're making it harder for both traditional search engines and AI-powered search tools to understand that side of your business.

The same applies to landscapers, roofers, electricians, restaurants, and professional service businesses.

Your website should make three things clear:

What you do. Where you do it. Why someone should consider hiring you.

2. Your Google Business Profile still matters

Some business owners think AI search means Google Business Profiles are becoming obsolete.

Not even close.

Your Google Business Profile remains important for Google Maps, local searches, reviews, and helping customers verify your business.

Accurate categories, services, contact information, photos, and genuine customer reviews all contribute to a stronger online presence.

AI platforms don't all use the same information sources, and a Google Business Profile doesn't guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation.

But maintaining accurate business information across the web gives customers and search systems more reliable information to work with.

3. What other websites say about you matters, too

Here's something business owners often overlook.

Your own website can say you're the best contractor in South Jersey. But what independent evidence supports that?

Maybe you've been mentioned in a local publication. Maybe another business links to your website. Maybe customers have left detailed reviews describing actual work you've completed.

Those independent signals can help establish credibility.

For AI search, being discoverable isn't just about repeating keywords. It's also about having a business presence that can be independently understood and verified.

That's one reason we encourage clients to build a real reputation online rather than chase shortcuts.

4. Your website needs to answer real customer questions

Think about how people actually talk to ChatGPT.

They don't always type “roofing company NJ.”

They might ask:

“My roof is leaking, and I need someone in Camden County who can inspect it this week. Who should I call?”

That question contains a problem, a service, a location, and a sense of urgency.

A roofing website that clearly explains leak repairs, inspections, emergency service availability, and the towns it serves provides more useful information than a generic page that just repeats “best roofing company.”

This is where traditional SEO and AI Search Optimization overlap.

Good content answers the customer's question before they ever pick up the phone.

5. South Jersey businesses have another challenge: seasonality

A business in Wildwood or Cape May may serve completely different customers in July than it does in January.

A landscaping company might promote mowing during spring and summer, then fall cleanups and property maintenance later in the year.

A heating and cooling contractor may shift attention between air conditioning, heating installations, and energy-efficient upgrades.

Your online presence should reflect those changing customer needs.

The goal isn't simply to show up for one keyword.

It's to help the right customer find your business throughout the year. For more on how that shift plays out, see why your customers may be searching differently.

6. Can you guarantee your business will appear in ChatGPT?

No. And anyone promising guaranteed recommendations should be questioned.

AI responses can change depending on the question, location, available sources, and the system being used.

There's no special file, hidden keyword, or single website change that guarantees ChatGPT will recommend your company.

What businesses can do is improve the information AI systems may discover: useful website content, accurate business details, credible third-party mentions, and clear explanations of their services.

Then they can test relevant customer questions and monitor whether their visibility improves.

7. What should a small business do first?

Before spending money on another advertising campaign or a complete website rebuild, find out where you currently stand.

  • Search Google for your important services.
  • Ask ChatGPT questions your customers might actually ask.
  • Look at which competitors appear and what information supports their visibility.
  • Then compare that with your own website, Google Business Profile, reviews, and online presence.

You might need better service pages. You might need stronger local SEO. Or your biggest opportunity might be something you haven't considered.

The answer should come from looking at your business, not selling you the same marketing package everyone else gets.
